Graduate College Policy
Below is a quick overview of some of the academic policies
graduate students frequently encounter. You are urged to obtain a Graduate
College Catalog and become familiar with the details relevant to your
degree program. Copies can be obtained from the Graduate College or
viewed on the Internet at: http://grad.arizona.edu/Catalog/
Full-Time
Status
For the purposes of financial aid and scholarships,
the minimum number of units a student may carry, and still be considered
full-time, is 9. For those holding teaching or research assistantships, the
minimum is reduced to 6. When all regular coursework is complete and a
student is enrolled for 900-level credit (thesis, research, project), at
least 3 units must be carried every semester enrolled. Other
enrollment requirements may be applicable depending upon the type of aid
being sought. Review the Graduate Catalog and contact the Graduate College
Financial Aid Office for more detailed information.
Academic
Progress
At least half of a student’s total credits must have letter
grades assigned (i.e. A, B, C, etc.). A 3.0 grade point average must be
maintained to be eligible for a degree. Students automatically fall into
probationary status if their overall GPA is less than 3.0. Probation must be
remedied within two consecutive semesters, or degree-seeking status will be
lost. A grade of “Incomplete” (I) must be cleared with a letter grade within
one calendar year of taking the course or experience, or it becomes an “E”,
which is computed as a failing grade.
Substitution
of Core Courses
Students can petition to substitute a core course if they
have previously taken closely related, graduate-level courses. Evidence of content
must be included in the petition, which preferably will include the original
syllabus of that course. Transcripts must show a grade of B, or better, was
earned. Substitution petitions must be requested through the Gerontology
Program Coordinator. If granted, the units awarded for the substituting
course will count toward the maximum transfer units acceptable for the
program (9).
